“PRESIDENT’S POINT OF VIEW” by our chapter President, Sherry Parmon

(excerpt from the April edition of Dance Chatter)

We just finished having our chapter dance, and it’s nice to reflect upon how well things went. We had a nice turnout, a good show, and a wonderful volunteer crew. I’m left with a feeling of satisfaction at a job well done and knowing that people are willing to volunteer to help keep the organization going. We are continuing to plan events which include the Black Tie and the fabulous National Qualifying Competition in Feb., which Felix will explain more about in his Competition Corner. In the back of my brain, I keep thinking that there will be a few people out there who will be willing to join the board in order to really keep things going. We have over 100 active members of this organization who participate in our events, and many of these members, as well as non-members, help in small ways. We couldn’t have gotten this far without their help and support.

However, we really do need people to join the board. I know how busy and over-extended and stressed most people are today, but we will lose a valuable resource to the dance community if we can’t continue. Our secretary, Priscilla Dean, will be resigning at the end of the year, and I’m not sure about other board members at this point. According to our National Organization, we need the four basic officers: president, vice president, treasurer and secretary, plus three directors-at-large. We should have seven board members, but are already down a person with six. Our board terms are two years, but we are considering making our next election a one-year commitment. The year goes fast and this may be more doable to some people. We are looking for people who enjoy dancing on any level, even if you’re a beginner, who can participate in most of the events, which include six dances, a black tie, a competition and six board meetings. Of course we know that people have jobs and personal lives so we understand if you can’t make it to everything.

We need people who enjoy working with other people and are open-minded to another person’s point of view. We are a democracy and vote on all important issues. We also need people who are on email often because with only six board meetings a year, we frequently communicate by email. After elections are over, it’s up to the new Board to decide the officers and who will play what role.

It is not a matter of “they’ll figure it out” - “they’ll make do somehow” or “it’s not my problem”. We are in a serious situation regarding the continuation of our chapter and our membership needs to step up. It’s no joke that our competition in February 2011 may be our last event. I wouldn’t have been on the board for almost six years if it wasn’t a rewarding activity. We have put on great events and I’ve made wonderful friends, and if I can do it, anyone can. I know the unknown can be intimidating, so please come to the Aug. 8 board meeting with no obligation other than see what it’s like and possibly ask questions.  Thank you. Sherry.
